Through lectures, exhibitions, presentations, and an idea competition, a continual and interdisciplinary discourse will be opened focusing on innovative artistic strategies on the theme of design and its realization, thereby actively highlighting the interface of design and the economy and fostering its new definition. In order to clarify design’s relevance in terms of expanding our perception and in doing so, invigorate Vienna as a location, a series of lectures with accompanying presentations of objects, will focus on the axis London Milan Vienna. It is necessary to ask what Vienna learns from the prospering design metropolises of London and Milan, and how it can better position itself internationally as a location for young, creative design. International designers and entrepreneurs, artistic leaders and visionary thinkers from London, Milan, and Vienna are invited to present their projects at the MAK with the support of departure, to develop new approaches here, and discuss their concepts in detail. Currently scheduled to deliver lectures are Ron Arad, Omar Vulpinari, and Gregor Eichinger. Ron Arad’s projects are distinguished by the courage to think differently of things. He is a much-honored industrial designer whose experimental designs undercut conventions and supposed stipulations. Omar Vulpinari has been the head of Fabrica, founded as a creative laboratory, since 1998. Due to his work as a designer, as well as his many years of experience dealing with young design students, his lecture promises to provide important impulses for Vienna as a design location. Gregor Eichinger’s concepts and projects are distinguished by an open and mobile understanding of design. In that, he is especially interested in an expanded concept of architecture that allows him to combine architecture, design, art, music, and film. Also presented in the MAK DESIGN SPACE under the title “START_UP: Designer’s New Projects,” will be prototypes and innovative ideas by young Austrian designers. |
