SITTING

Sitting is the primary bodily position assumed by people in Western industrialized nations. We spend most of our working hours—and a large part of our leisure time—seated. We sit when we are reading or writing; we sit while eating and when we are in social settings or travelling.

For these purposes, a variety of furniture styles for sitting has emerged, from plain stools and benches to chairs and armchairs up to sumptuous upholstered furniture and sofas.

The series of chairs and stools in the MAK DESIGN LAB give insight into the manifold possibilities of form for seating and allow comparisons to be made between furniture types, materials, functionalities and developmental stages. In this topic area of the MAK DESIGN LAB, artistic, industrial and alternative modes of production may be recognized in their various incarnations.
