What do we expect of the coffeehouses of the future? With an eye to reconceiving this important cultural and social hub, the MAK and departure, the creative agency of the City of Vienna, organized an applied research project as part of the cooperative program design> new strategies. Under the research direction of Viennese architect and coffeehouse expert Gregor Eichinger, and with the guidance of raumlaborberlin, Antenna Design, New York, and Studio Andrea Branzi, Milan, design lab sessions generated over 20 project ideas pertaining to the future of the coffeehouse; some of these were tested in actual practice as part of a working experimental design. The present research diary contains insights from this work and also encourages coffeehouse-going readers to entertain their own ideas for new concepts and improvements.Presentation of the publication on the synonymous applied research project in a pop-up café, furnished with the new Thonet chair model No. 107 by Robert Stadler.DAS GROSSE WIENER KAFFEEHAUS-EXPERIMENT / THE GREAT VIENNESE CAFÉ: A LABORATORY, published by the MAK & departure, texts by Thomas Geisler, Bettina Leidl, Markus F.
