Gustav Peichl & the Südstadt

Fri, 25.05.2018
MAK on TOUR reveals how Gustav Peichl’s architectural drawings relate to real buildings. The tour begins in the MAK with a guided tour through the exhibition GUSTAV PEICHL: 15 Buildings for His 90th. It continues with a bus ride to Südstadt in Maria Enzersdorf, where participants enjoy a viewing and guided tour of the EVN headquarter and the evn collection.

The EVN headquarter building stands out due to its clear-cut, modernist cuboid form. Designed in the late 1950s by the team of architects Wilhelm Hubatsch, Franz Kiener, and Gustav Peichl , it was conceived as a central building in a modern garden city, the Südstadt. The seven-storey building is a highly functional office complex; its characteristic features are the free-standing concrete supports and the strict linearity of the strip windows looking east and west. In 1993 the EVN FORUM was added, a spacious event center also designed by Gustav Peichl.
