Lower Exhibition Hall
For the first time, Jannis Kounellis, a crucial figure of contemporary art, shows a representative survey of his work in Austria. Jannis Kounellis, one of the founders of the sixties' arte povera movement in Italy, frequently works with the contradiction of industrial and natural materials. His installations aim at visualizing issues of historical and cultural identity within the dichotomies of past and present. Besides important works from the eighties and crucial later works, the artist will show a new space intervention in the central exhibition hall which he especially created for the MAK. Born in Piraeus, Greece, in 1936, Jannis Kounellis has been living an working in Rome since 1956.
