100 BEST POSTERS 18

Germany Austria Switzerland

Wed, 6.11.2019–Sun, 1.3.2020

MAK – Museum of Applied Arts

The competition 100 BEST POSTERS 18: Germany Austria Switzerland is considered the benchmark for measuring the state of contemporary poster design. Digital media continue to be consumed in increasingly large quantities, but the poster’s attention-grabbing status remains undiminished. The presentation of the winning posters in the MAK provides a comprehensive overview of current trends and innovative approaches in graphic design, this year once again bearing witness to the rich creativity of communication design in German-speaking countries.

The competition was judged by an international jury composed of renowned designers: Anette Lenz (Paris, chair), Anna Haas (Zurich), Astrid Seme (Vienna), Johanna Siebein, and Andrea Tinnes (both Berlin) first made a selection from 2 353 posters submitted online. 695 posters by 251 artists (105 of whom were from Germany, 129 from Switzerland, and 17 from Austria) made it to the final jury session. The prizewinning posters and poster series by country were 42 × Germany, 54 × Switzerland, and 4 × Austria.

This year’s selection is being presented in the MAK Works on Paper Room and the gallery of the Columned Main Hall. The corporate design of the catalog, the web visuals, and the printed material are by Hi – Megi Zumstein & Claudio Barandun of Zurich.

A cooperation between the MAK and the association 100 Beste Plakate e. V.
Curator: Peter Klinger, Deputy Head, MAK Library and Works on Paper Collection

A new dimension of seeing

As was the case last year, visitors to the exhibition can access selected prizewinning motifs as animated “Moving Posters” on their smart phone or tablet using the Artivive app.

All the posters at a glance

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog entitled C Beste Plakate XVIII. Deutschland Österreich Schweiz/C Best Posters XVIII. Germany Austria Switzerland published by Verlag Kettler, with contributions from each jury member and a feature article by Tulga Beyerle: Women Designers? A Game of Hide and Seek. She sketches the checkered history of women in design, a field dominated by men, to include her own personal experience in the profession. German/English, 304 pages, Dortmund 2019. Available at the MAK Design Shop and at MAKdesignshop.at for € 30.80.
