After the “Anschluss” in March 1938, Gertrude Schüller who was persecuted as a Jew fled via Switzerland to New York where she died in 1946. In December 1938, the Gestapo assigned six objects from her art collection, which were at the MAK as loans, as well as 15 other pieces from the Gertrude Schüller collection to the museum. After 1945, Gertrude Schüller’s sons sought restitution of their mother’s collection. On 18 August 1947, the 21 objects from the Schüller collection that were inventoried at the MAK were restituted. Four objects, however, remained at the museum as loans and were eventually restituted on 18 April 1950 and 28 July 1952.
