The Swiss soprano legend Edith Mathis as poetry recitalist, the Salzburg baritone Rafael Fingerlos, and the German pianist Sascha El Mouissi present a morning of works by Robert Schumann and Heinrich Heine in the Geymüllerschlössel.On the program are works by the composer Robert Schumann and the poet Heinrich Heine. The focus is on A Poet’s Love, a cycle of 16 songs by the composer Robert Schumann, who in his Opus 48 created a masterpiece of romantic art song. The cycle was inspired in 1840 by Heine’s Lyrical Intermezzo, a collection of 65 poems. In that year, after a lengthy, nerve-racking altercation with his former teacher Friedrich Wieck, Schumann was finally able to marry Wieck’s daughter, the pianist Clara Wieck. The baritone Rafael Fingerlos—accompanied by the pianist Sascha El Mouissi—interprets the 16 titles of A Poet’s Love, as well as other songs by Schumann.
