Picture books—whether for children or adults—can impressively express the different artistic tendencies through the medium of the book. During this process, the artists’ deeply impressive creativity becomes visible, which knows how to bring not only the beauty, wealth, and hope, but also the threats of our world into pictures. A selection of picture books from the 1960s to the present, for example by Sonia Delaunay, Bruno Munari, Olaf Nicolai, and Lawrence Weiner, gives an impression of this diversity. This exhibition is a continuation of the children’s book exhibitions shown at the MAK in the past. In addition to loans from the Friedrich C. Heller Collection, objects from the MAK Collection’s significant holdings will be presented.

Conversation Piece: Dinner for One

With the psychiatrist and initiator of the platform against loneliness Dr. Karin Gutiérrez Lobos
iCalTue, 20.12.2022 7 pm8 pm
Please registerConversation Piece: Dinner for One When we celebrate, we celebrate being together, together. Christmas, which we often think of as “the big celebration,” is for many of us, however, also the “celebration of loneliness,” when we become especially painfully aware of being alone. We are social beings. Contact with others is of existential importance. Avoiding loneliness is a survival characteristic of the human being—based in our evolution,” according to the Vienna psychiatrist and neurologist Karin Gutiérrez-Lobos. We will also talk with the expert about the current concern revolving around the loneliness of a young generation, as well as about how important the feeling of fellowship is and how we can engage ourselves as a society on its behalf. We also consider whether and how museums can and should become places that counter isolation.

We need to talk! The MAK starts the new art education format Conversation Pieces. We will speak with artists, activists, scientists, and personalities from various fields about select objects from the MAK Collection. Conversation Pieces is dedicated to themes like diversity, feminism, participation or loneliness, symbiotic bodies, racism in collections, planet care, and much more. We use the MAK as a polyphonic place for the exchange of ideas and to engage in various sociopolitical discourses and problems that enable new perspectives on an extraordinary collection. Conversation Pieces can be understood as an impetus to make widespread pictorial worlds and narratives visible and to critically question them by talking about them together.

Music is an essential element of celebration. It exhilarates and changes everything. The revelers listen, dance, place themselves in the limelight, drift, or forget themselves and the world. On the occasion of the THE FEST exhibition, we are inviting Electric Indigo to talk about music and her work. The music producer, DJ, and founder of the network platform female:pressure has been transforming spaces around the world with electronic music for the last 30 years and will spend an evening in the MAK talking about her experience as a musician in the context of celebrations.
