Conversation Piece Let’s Stop Sweeping It under the Carpet with Salam Oida

Textiles are an essential material in various histories of everyday life and different cultures, and textile techniques like embroidery or weaving are connected with different traditions. Carpets in particular are important bearers of meaning for various communities, including Muslim communities.

As a conversation piece we have chosen the work Repository (2020) by the Canadian artist Kapwani Kiwanga (* 1978). It is a tapestry whose geometric pattern is produced by fields of color in various earthy tones. Grains of rice made of glass have been sewn into the work: a reference to stories of how certain types of rice migrated from Africa to America during the transatlantic slave trade.

MAK – Museum of Applied Arts
In the context of the exhibition HARD/SOFT: Textiles and Ceramics in Contemporary Art, we will speak with Salam Oida about the stuffs our histories are made of. We will also talk about the possibilities for artistic practice to include the perspectives and narratives of different communities and how this can make our society more open. Asma Aiad and Ramazan Yildiz will discuss their work with Salam Oida in the Austrian cultural scene, as well as their view of the museum and a means of exhibiting and educating that encourages self-empowerment, self-determination, and self-presentation, as well as artistic progress.

Join in the conversation and stop sweeping it under the carpet, oida!

THE FORMAT CONVERSATION PIECES
This year the MAK once more has a lot to offer … and a lot to discuss! In our Conversation Pieces we talk with a wide range of people about their lives, what they know, and what they do, thus creating links and discovering affinities with the museum’s numerous exhibitions. For in 2024 we deal with such urgent topics as protest, civil resistance, alternatives to consumption and economic growth, antiracist strategies and artists’ approaches to all of these. Drop by and join in the conversation!
