Directors' News 2020

Dear Friends of the Museum,

Less is more—and more sustainable!

Climate change dramatically highlights what we have perhaps always suspected: our throwaway society with its ideology of mass consumption is leading us into a dead end. Instead of mindlessly generating quantity, in the future we must focus on creating sustainable quality. Progress is impossible without new ideas that are based on respect for our planet’s resources. This is true for art as well, and museums in particular as key educational institutions of the 21st century must set an example.

Quality has absolute priority at the MAK—sustainable quality as regards its collection, its exhibitions, and its events. Instead of the usual routine of art-as-entertainment, we offer carefully selected, distinctive, and inspirational visions of applied art—based on the maxim: less but of lasting value!
We are thus especially happy that in 2019 the MAK was once again able to celebrate a record year. This motivates us to continue our efforts to win your support and share with you those common values that we so urgently need to shape our future.

We look forward to inspirational encounters in the MAK!
