"Facing west from California’s shores, inquiring, tireless, seeking what is yet unfound, I, a child, very old, over waves, towards the house of maternity, the land of migrations, look afar, look off the shores of my Western sea, the circle almost circled..."  ("Facing West from California’s Shores", in: Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass, 1900)

Two of the first recipients of a Schindler scholarship meet under the title SUNSET: DELAYED: Andrea Lenardin Madden as architect and Kasper Kovitz as fine artist, both of whom live and work in Los Angeles. As a result, the exhibition focuses on the question as to whether the profound American myth of ‘setting out west’ has any relevance today, and how the significance of this myth has changed: “The seemingly inexhaustible potential of the west inspired our forefathers to take over the vast expanse of land in a wasteful manner. Having reached the Western frontier, space is no longer abundant and our perception of space is in a state of transformation.” For the duration of this exhibition, the MAK Gallery has been turned into a waiting room, and a location for negotiating this theme. Moreover, bringing together an architect and a fine artist for the purposes of collaboration once again examines the relation between art and architecture.

On the occasion of the exhibition Andrea Lenardin Madden has developed and produced an exclusive edition: "2x4 interlocking sandal", inspired by the Japanese Geta sandal, handmade in California and limited to 100 numbered pairs.
