The VERTICAL GARDEN exhibition presents the results of an architectural competition initiated by Eric Owen Moss (Director of SCI-Arc, Los Angeles) and Peter Noever (Director MAK, Vienna) for the protection of the Schindler House, Los Angeles, an icon of revolutionary modernist architecture. In the center of the invitational with 14 architects and designers participating was the task of creating a "buffer" between the Schindler House site and a nearly completed huge condominium on the neighboring property.

At the same time, VERTICAL GARDEN is a follow-up on the 2003 competition "Schindler's Paradise: Architectural Resistance" in which established and young architects developed twenty alternative proposals for the condominium complex on property neighboring on the Schindler House which then still was in a planning stage.

Following the first presentation at SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles), the MAK Gallery now presents the four winning projects as well as all architectural proposals submitted which all succeeded to incorporate avant-garde architecture with the specific conditions of this special site.
