Working in Joseph Binders studio or even attending his courses was considered a springboard to professional success. His writings on the harmony of color contrasts and his complex advertising theories made him the most influential Austrian graphic designer of his time: Joseph Binder (18981972) not only revolutionized graphic design in Austria but also, with his innovative poster designs, caused a sensation in the USA.
The MAK exhibition
AFTER BINDER focuses on the tremendous influence his work had on graphic design as a whole by showing examples of works by his students and assistants, ranging from Margit Dopplers Kirstein-Blockmalz-Mann through posters by Lois Gaigg, August Schmid, Erwin Tintner, Peter Tölzer, Friedrich Veit and Arthur Zelger, to the works of Alex Steinweiss, the inventor of the illustrated record cover. It is supplemented by the presentation of MAKs poster database comprising approximately 15,000 online posters.
