BOOK PRESENTATION
CAMONDO. Eine Familiengeschichte in Briefen (Letters to Camondo)
by Edmund de Waal
After “The Hare with Amber Eyes,” a new masterpiece of memoir literature by Edmund de Waal.
History is not the past, it never stops and unfolds in our hands. This is what Edmund de Waal writes in his new book, which takes him back to the Rue de Monceau in Paris, where his ancestor Charles Ephrussi once tended the famous hare with amber eyes, where Marcel Proust lived in the immediate neighborhood, and where the banker Moïse de Camondo from Constantinople had a palace built that today houses a museum unchanged since 1936. No one just happened to find themselves in this “street of beginnings,” de Waal says, and begins to write imaginary letters to Moïse about the multifaceted relationships of their two families, about assimilation, generosity, private and public life, and again and again about the importance of memory and that there cannot and must not be a “closing line.”
