Combined Tour: Thomas Demand as Artist and Curator in Vienna

MAK x fjk3

We begin at the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts with a curator-led tour of the exhibition THOMAS DEMAND, accompanied by curator Bärbel Vischer. We then continue on foot to the nearby fjk3 – Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst, where Fiona Liewehr, artistic director of fjk3, will guide us through Passants parmi les pierres, an exhibition curated by Thomas Demand, beginning at 5.45 pm.

Drawing on historical designs for stage sets—from Baroque theater scenery to those created around the turn of the 20th century—Demand has developed a series of works especially for the MAK that translates a selection of models from the Theatermuseum Wien and the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco into the medium of photography. Thinking in terms of models as a cultural practice, and their significance for how we experience reality and engage with the past, runs throughout his artistic oeuvre.

The exhibition Passants parmi les pierres at fjk3 revolves around images that do more than simply depict: they simultaneously produce the reality to which they refer. Perception as construction, memory as montage, the image as a form of history. In this process, the work itself becomes a space for thought—not as a reproduction, but as an arrangement of visibility.
