MAK Design Kids: Shaping Wood and Making Lights

with designer Basse Stittgen

Together with designer Basse Stittgen, you’ll experiment with a very special material and an approach that draws inspiration from the forest ecosystem. Basse has developed a bioplastic made from cellulose and lignin—two substances that occur together in the cell walls of every tree.

This lets you knead wood and use it to create a fantastic, branched candleholder made of bioplastic! First, you’ll build a wooden frame using a modular system, which you’ll then cover with the wood mixture.

Even the shape of your candleholders resembles a branching tree or an entire forest. And just like in the forest: be prepared for the fact that no hands will stay clean.
