About Hartmut Rosa
Hartmut Rosa is Professor of General and Theoretical Sociology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. He studied political science at the University of Freiburg, after which he was a research assistant at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a spell as research assistant in the Department of Political Science at the University of Mannheim, in 1997 he received his doctorate in political science from the Humboldt University in Berlin. Thereafter he was a research assistant at the University of Jena until 2004. From 2001 to 2002, Hartmut Rosa was Visiting Professor at the New School for Social Research in New York and has held the post of Affiliated Professor at this institution since 2002. In 2004 he completed his Habilitation [postdoctoral qualification] in Sociology and Political Science at the University of Jena. Until his appointment at the University of Jena in 2005, he held posts as acting professor in Essen and Augsburg. Since 2013, Hartmut Rosa has also been Director of the Max Weber Center in Erfurt. In 2018 he was awarded the Erich Fromm Prize. In the same year, Hartmut Rosa received the Paul Watzlawick Ring of Honor, and in 2016 he was awarded the Tractatus Prize for Philosophical Essay Writing. Hartmut Rosa’s research interests include temporal diagnostics and modernist analytics, the normative and empirical foundations of social criticism, subject and identity theory, temporal sociology and acceleration theory, and the sociology of our relationship with the world.



The event is part of the series Utopia! Is the World out of Joint? Observations on the Art of the Enlightenment presented by the University of Klagenfurt together with the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
