A Sound Map of the Danube is a multichannel sound installation that traces the Danube and its surroundings from its headwaters in the Black Forest to its estuary at the Black Sea. The soundscape of the river is interwoven with the voices of twelve people for whom the river plays a central role in their lives. They were asked, “What does the river mean to you? Could you live without it?” They spoke to us in their native languages, thus the audio is accompanied by a book with translations into German and English, as well as a large wall map showing the places where the recordings were made. Based on the wall map and a time display, listeners can follow the course of the river. (Annea Lockwood)
