Some 2 billion people worldwide still have no access to safe drinking water, and only three in five can wash their hands in comfort. Access to clean drinking water and sanitary facilities is not only essential for a healthy life; it is also a human right. A secure water supply and sewage disposal system must therefore be made available and affordable for everyone. Optimal networking between design solutions—specifically low-tech approaches—and appropriate operating procedures in water and sewage infrastructures plays an important role here. The ADA supports projects that facilitate cross-border water resource management in creating sustainable water and sanitary facilities and strengthens the institutions responsible. But cooperation between sustainable design solutions and globally supportive management is only part of the solution; we must also fundamentally rethink our everyday use of water on a local level and increase awareness of our water-based human condition. This interdisciplinary talk is conducted with an understanding of the need for networked reflection on the responsible creation of water cycles and on our hybrid cohabitation with water, a vital resource and a key factor in reducing poverty, caring for the planet, and working for peace.
