MAK Works on Paper Room

A growing interest in the pleasures of consumerism posed a new challenge to the advertising artists of the 1920s. With his austere and reduced form language and memorable planar style, Hermann Kosel (1896-1983) ideally embodied the spirit of the epoch and soon became one of the most sought-after advertising artists and an important pioneer of a new generation of poster artists. Following the thorough restoration of its large holdings of Hermann Kosel posters, the MAK presents, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the artist's death, his works for, a. o., Rikola Books, the shoe manufacturer Humanic, as well as the International Automobile Show of 1931.

With this presentation shown in the Works on Paper Room, the MAK continues its mission to bring poster art to greater public awareness and also outlines the career of this graphic designer as a representative of Austrian advertising art until the 1970s.
