Probably the most famous woman artist of the Wiener Werkstätte, Vally Wieselthier (1895–1945) wanted to be known as a “ceramic sculptor.” And it is true that she primarily made a name for herself as a ceramicist. Yet Wieselthier was more than that. Volume 32 of the MAK Studies invites readers to discover a new side to this versatile creative: alongside her groundbreaking works in clay, this publication also explores her designs for glasses, illustrations, advertising art, and fabric patterns. Wieselthier’s oeuvre combines art and practical object, craft and expressive design. Furthermore, it tells the story of a funny and self-confident woman who caused a stir in her birthplace, Vienna, and in her second hometown, New York.
