In cooperation with Wien Modern, the MAK extends an invitation to the Vienna premiere of Cod.Act.
31.10.2024—1.12.2024
MAK Forum
The works of brothers André and Michel Décosterd, recipients of many international awards, are located on the interface between sculpture, architecture, performance, sound, and music and overwhelm audiences with their sheer presence. In the MAK Columned Main Hall and the MAK Forum, the sound sculptures πTon und πTon/2, created in 2017, unfold their autonomous choreography accompanied by a remarkable sound sequence. At the start of the project and as part of the official opening of the Vienna Modern Festival 2024, Cod.Act will be performing live on Wednesday, 30.10.2024 at 6.30 pm in the MAK Columned Main Hall.
Cod.Act (André and Michel Décosterd)
André Décosterd (b. 1967 in Le Locle/Switzerland) lives in Seigneux/Switzerland. He completed his training as an organ builder in Neuchâtel before studying at the École de Jazz et de musique actuelle (EJMA) in Lausanne, and afterwards specializing in programmed music and algorithmic composition.
Michel Décosterd (b. 1969 in Le Locle/ Switzerland) lives in La Chaux-de- Fonds/Switzerland. He studied architecture at the School of Engineering in Biel (diploma 1994). The visual artist began his career as photographer before turning to constructing light-permeable kinetic devices.
In 1997 the brothers founded the group Cod.Act, that until his death worked closely with engineer Jacques Décosterd (1936–2024) in the fields of industrial informatics and automatization. The focus of the group’s artistic and scientific work is machines and objects that translate spaces and movements into sound, thus evolving a surprising, almost organic, life of their own. Cod.Act has received a range of prominent awards, including the Goldene Nica at the Ars Electronica Linz (2013) and three times the main award at the Japan Media Arts Festival (2010, 2012, 2014). In 2019 Cod.Act was awarded the Swiss Grand Award for Music.
