MAK Friday Lab: Sweet Ornaments

with the artist Lotti Brockmann

In this workshop, we embark on a journey to the origins of Christmas ornaments: once a luxury, sweets on the tree were a status symbol. Glassmakers copied apples and sugar decorations when real fruit or candy was too expensive — the beginning of a tradition that still shapes our Christmas trees today. Together, we’ll create sweet ornaments, exploring sugar as an artistic, temporary, and everyday material. We’ll investigate how the value of materials shifts and is redefined over time. Participants will melt, cast, shape, and caramelize, experiment with various sugar techniques and candies, and discover how material, form, and impermanence can come together as creative expression.
