"The best animals are the flat animals - the best space is the deep space" is a multi-part exhibition project by the American film and video artist Diana Thater and consists of eight works in 27 parts, reassembled in each installation in the context of the five planned exhibition venues. The presentation at the MAK Center, consisting of three corresponding video works, dimensionally took up the architectural environment of the Schindler House and set it up as a membrane projection surface between the outside and the inside. Thater's evocative use of animals contrasts nature with un-natural conditions and raises issues of nature versus culture. What we see in the work are staged tableaus of domesticated animals and cultivated nature, settings Thater uses to question the methodologies of artistic and filmic representation, modes of perception and the construction of meaning.
