VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE 2019

BRAVE NEW VIRTUES. Shaping Our Digital World

Wed, 29.05.2019–Sun, 06.10.2019

MAK – Museum of Applied Arts

On the basis of which values can the utopia of an economically and socially just and fair as well as ecologically sustainable future become reality? “With the possibilities of art, design, and architecture, the Vienna Biennale will contribute to shaping a future based on values,” Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, General Director of the MAK and initiator and head of the Vienna Biennale, states. Artists, designers, and architects from all continents will take a stance towards the future we really want. The VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE: BRAVE NEW VIRTUES. Shaping Our Digital World will focus on brave visions on handling artificial intelligence and new technologies, on shaping innovative (urban) ways of work, on new ways of living (together), and on responsible consumption.

The organizers of the Vienna Biennale—MAK, University of Applied Arts Vienna, Kunsthalle Wien, Architekturzentrum Wien, and Vienna Business Agency, as well as Slovak Design Center as Associate Partner and AIT Austrian Institute of Technology as non-university research partner—will explore meaningful and actually applicable values for Digital Modernity in several locations.

Vienna Biennale
The Vienna Biennale is the first event of its kind to combine art, design, and architecture, with the aim of generating creative ideas and artistic projects to help improve the world. Its category-spanning, interdisciplinary approach and combination of artistic ambition and the creative economy open up new perspectives on central topics of our time and thus promote positive change in our society. The Vienna Biennale was established with the understanding that we are living in a new modernity in which the digital revolution penetrates all areas of our life and is thus fundamentally changing our civilization. Today's Digital Modernity offers considerable potentials for lasting improvements in quality of life as well as innovative living concepts and business models in every sector.

MAK DESIGN LAB
Guided tour through the reinstallation of the MAK DESIGN LAB followed by further discussion at the restaurant Salonplafond im MAK

The reinstallation of the MAK DESIGN LAB positions design as a motor of sustainable change. Objects from the MAK Collection are placed into a new context and are positioned at the interface between everyday life, society, digitalization, and climate change based on multi-faceted perspectives. The MAK DESIGN LAB is dedicated to the questions and chances of a post-growth society and shows how we can succeed in cooperating in a fair, sustainable, and meaningful way, what an economy for the common good can imply for the market economy and digital education for work in the future. It shows how we have to change our habits and consumption patterns to restore functioning cycles, and what a good life can look like after the current overabundance.

The reorganization of the MAK DESIGN LAB is financially supported by the EU program INTERREG V-A Slovakia–Austria (Project “Design & Innovation”) and is realized in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research.
