With the exhibition "Davaj! Russian Art Now", the MAK, in cooperation with the Berlin Festival, presents Russia's young radical art scene, which does not look west anymore but has found an independent language of its own. Despite the never-ending political and social crises, "laboratories of free art" have established themselves in Moscow and other cities and towns between the slab apartment buildings, the slums, and the fortress-like turreted homes of the new Russians, as well as in clubs, Internet cafés, and galleries. Unencumbered by the old ideology and metaphysical obsessions, the artists develop new strategies with a clear emphasis on self-presentation, performance, and the new media.
This is the first exhibition that not only includes artists from the metropolitan centers, Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also from other parts of the Russian Confederation, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. "Davaj! Russian Art Now," assembled in cooperation with a Russian team of curators, is aimed at capturing the different approaches and tendencies of new Russian art.
