Opening of the MAK Winter Studio pop-up exhibition

Followed by: Discussion panel “The Museum as a Toolbox”

MAK and BMWKMS joint event on the Creative Europe program on the occasion of the EU project AbeX

In an interactive pop-up exhibition, we present the artistic projects developed during the MAK Winter Atelier, where international students and emerging artists worked together with designer Sven Völker to explore the potential of the artist’s book as a dialogic medium for individual creative production. The focus lies on developing prototypes that demonstrate how the book can serve as a tool for co-creative exchange of ideas. Central to this process are experimentation with different tools and the testing and sharing of methods related to image, text, and material composition.

Since its founding, the MAK has understood itself as a place of dialogue, addressing both producers and consumers and maintaining an active, reciprocal exchange with them. The museum is not intended as a place of passive marveling, but as a space that conveys ideas, invites inquiry, and encourages both individual and collective creative agency. Empowering visitors to think and act creatively is a key objective of the MAK’s educational mission.

Together with picture book artist and artistic director of the MAK Atelier, Sven Völker, artist Andrea Maurer, and expert in poetic literature Senka Gavranov, we will discuss the significance of the book as a potential artistic medium for all, and the importance of sharing artistic tools and skills. Why is the museum’s activating role as a “toolbox” for design so essential—and how can it be collectively and interculturally strengthened?
