AbeX
Anthologies of Cooperation: Encounters in/through Artists' Books and Experimental Poetry
Project Management MAK: Kathrin Pokorny-Nagel, Head MAK Library and Works on Paper Collection/Archive
Project Assistance: Aline Müller
With the interdisciplinary EU project AbeX, which started in January 2025, the MAK places artists’ books at the center of interest and pairs artistically designed book objects with experimental poetry. Together with the Faculty of Media and Communications (FMK) Belgrade and the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC) in Bucharest, the goal of the project is to make the characteristics of these multifaceted genres publicly accessible. The meaning of artists’ books as holistic works of art, as objects between design concept and artisanal precision is highlighted. With this project, the MAK is building on the artists’ book project AboT (Artists’ Books on Tour, 2010-2012), which was also financed by the EU.
Lectures, blog posts, a symposium, workshops for adults and children, as well as a Summer and a Winter School (CALL FOR THE MAK WINTER ATELIER) for art students from Austria, Romania, and Serbia are planned. The results of the Winter School will be presented to the public in a pop-up exhibition at the MAK. Alongside this educational focus, the exhibition TURNING PAGES: Artists’s Books of the Present (1.10.2025–22.3.2026) with accompanying publication will show how divers the book as a medium is. The spectrum ranges from illustrated concept books to avant-garde poetry to books as purely aesthetic objects.
