The second exhibition in the series features Austrian artist Hans Schabus working in collaboration with The Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), a Los Angeles-based research and education organization. Parallel exhibits of maps and photographs by Hans Schabus and CLUI depict different kinds of crossings of the landscape. In Schabus’ work, we see an urban river, crossed by bridges and pipelines. The photographs from CLUI show a highway in the salt flats, crossed by culverts, located on a topographic landscape map. Together these works comment on different qualities of conveyance, different modes of perception, and our relationship to what was once known as the “natural world,” but is now something else entirely.

Garage Exchange Vienna – Los Angeles
The MAK Center’s programming is guided by the imperative to promote dialogue and question boundaries, be they geographic or disciplinary. A key to this mission is the Artists and Architects-in-Residence program, which embodies these ideas by bringing international, early career practitioners to Los Angeles. In order to expand the cultural exchange at the core of the residency program, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture and the MAK Center have initiated a new, biannual exhibition series, Garage Exchange Vienna – Los Angeles, which invites Austrian and Viennabased alumni residents to collaborate with L.A. artists and architects of their choosing at the Garage Top at the Mackey Apartments.
