Textile creation is one of the world’s oldest cultural techniques. And since Anni Albers and Gottfried Semper, the craft has also been considered within the discourse of art history. A key focus of art theorist Rike Frank’s work is textiles in contemporary fine art. Together with Bärbel Vischer—curator of the exhibition
HARD/SOFT—the art expert looks at Dorothea Tanning’s installation
Chambre 202, Hôtel du Pavot (1970), a surrealist setting in which bodies and fetishes grow out of the furniture, walls, and fireplace. The pair also discuss Magdalena Abakanowicz’s spectacular, monumental pieces made from natural materials such as sisal, flax, and horsehair.
THE FORMAT CONVERSATION PIECESThis year the MAK once more has a lot to offer … and a lot to discuss! In our Conversation Pieces we talk with a wide range of people about their lives, what they know, and what they do, thus creating links and discovering affinities with the museum’s numerous exhibitions. For in 2024 we deal with such urgent topics as protest, civil resistance, alternatives to consumption and economic growth, antiracist strategies and artists’ approaches to all of these. Drop by and join in the conversation!
PRICE In addition to the event fee, a museum ticket (admission ticket, MAK Annual Pass, Kulturpass, etc.) is required to attend the event. Use the online booking tool for reduced admission, or take advantage of the new Conversation Piece 2024 subscription.
