A definite unpredictability characterizes the American artist Richard Artschwager's works. His oeuvre, which spans forty years, questions the familiar categorizations of Pop Art, Minimal Art, Concept Art, and New Sculpture. Artschwager's objects, sculptures, and furniture pieces are never unequivocal: his characteristic Formica tables and chairs are not only pieces of furniture but also sculptural items, pictorial representations - paintings "pushed into three dimensions," and, ultimately, stations reflecting the quality of things. The MAK exhibition shows a representative selection of Artschwager's work dedicated to the transition "from the accessible to the inaccessible." The artist will also provide a crucial accent for the central exhibition hall.
This Exhibition is realized in cooperation with Neues Museum - Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design in Nürnberg, Germany, and the Serpentine Gallery, London.
