Conversation Piece: Lieblingsstück und Queerschnitte [Favorite Piece and Queer Section] with Anna Menecia Antenete Hambira, Fashion designer

Every closet is a collection of figurative representations of ourselves. Our clothing in it complies with norms, but also offers opportunities to break these and reinterpret them. Clothing gives us the chance to differentiate ourselves as well as to connect in manifold ways. Fashion is shaped by consumer requirements and external control and impositions but can also be used as a vehicle for assertiveness.

Fashion designer Anna Menecia Antenete Hambira wants to give visibility and means of expression to marginalized groups like BIPoC and LGBTQIA+ through her work. The favorite pieces of a collection of clothing are of great significance in her thinking—and she will also select one from the MAK Collection, which will prompt a conversation and direct questions at us: What kind of self-images do private and also museum collections create? Can fashion still be worn in times of climate change—and if so, for whom?

BIPoC stands for “Black, Indigenous, and People of Color” and serves as a positive, political self-designation for racially discriminated individuals. It describes a common range of experiences shared by people who are not “white.” It is created, for example, through privileges not granted. This term does not (primarily) refer to skin color.

LGBTQIA+ is the abbreviation of the English words Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual/Transgender, Queer, Intersexual, and Asexual. This term has become generally accepted as a short form for all genders, gender identities, and sexual orientations that deviate from binary and heterosexual norms.

In the context of the exhibition CRITICAL CONSUMPTION

We need to talk! In the art education format Conversation Pieces we will speak with artists, activists, scientists, and personalities from various fields about select objects from the MAK Collection. Conversation Pieces is dedicated to themes like diversity, feminism, participation or loneliness, symbiotic bodies, racism in collections, planet care, and much more. We use the MAK as a polyphonic place for the exchange of ideas and to engage in various sociopolitical discourses and problems that enable new perspectives on an extraordinary collection. Conversation Pieces can be understood as an impetus to make widespread pictorial worlds and narratives visible and to critically question them by talking about them together.
